At InCommon, we bring generations together.
Since 2018, we’ve done that by taking primary school children into
local retirement homes to learn from and build friendships with
their older neighbours. Our workshops aim to build meaningful
connections and strengthen a sense of local community.
In February 2020, as Coronavirus spread, we paused all of our
face-to-face sessions. But we were reluctant to put an end to
some of the friendships that had been forming between young
and old during our programmes. When the UK lockdown was
announced, we knew that staying connected across generations
would be more important than ever.
So, in April, we launched InCommon Buddies, a project that
enables children and older people to share joyful moments
together from a distance. Each week, we’ve released a new set
of Buddies activities designed for phone and video calls. These
activities promote intergenerational learning, allowing children
and older people to teach one another about their experiences of
the world, while bringing some much needed joy and laughter
along the way.
